There's a new job market trend in Portland: Older workers getting work done ... to get work.

Dr. David McGilkey a facial plastic surgeon at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, says its a trend in the Portland area.

The procedure ranges in cost from $7,000 to $10,000 for a face-lift

Three months ago, Wendy Marsh had a face-lift. One big reason was to compete in a tight job market.

After 20 years as an Executive VP in marketing, March lost her job. Now, she's out hunting for jobs, competing with younger applicants.

"People don't notice," says March. "They say you look really rested, you look much happier."

Another popular procedure is a smile makeover. Adding porcelain veneers costs anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000.

"A lot of them are doing it to stay more current in the work environment," says Dr. Sue Wendling.

"You see executives now who have great smiles, and you kind of sort of expect that at that level," said Bill Brincefield, an executive who recently had the procedure done.

Surveys support the idea of enhancing appearance as a job-seeking strategy. In a recent poll, 73 percent say appearance makes a difference in getting hired. And 13 percent say they'd consider cosmetic surgery to improve their chances.
