SALEM -- The Oregon Senate has voted for a bill that would ban young people under 18 from tanning beds. The vote Monday was 17-11.
The bill contains two exceptions. Young people who have doctor's notes could use the tanning beds, and the Senate amended the bill to allow 17-year-olds to use them with their parents' permission.
The amended bill goes back to the House for a vote. Proponents say the bill will help prevent melanoma caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays.
Opponents say it will drive teens to use at-home tanning lamps, which are unregulated.
