Self-described “Lunatic farmer” and world-famous hero of the local food movement Joel Salatin is back in Oregon.

Owner of Polyface Farms in Virginia, the author and speaker Salatin is best known for his books “Folks, This Ain’t Normal,” “You Can Farm,” and for his appearance in the documentary “Food Inc.”

Salatin is a dedicated advocate of regional sustainability that mimics natural patterns in food production, composting and raising livestock that “on a commercial domestic scale insures moral and ethical boundaries to human cleverness.”

“We should all seek food closer to home, in our foodshed, our own bioregion. This means enjoying seasonality and reacquainting ourselves with our home kitchens,” he says.

The Willamette University Center for Sustainable Communities department is sponsoring the free lecture Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Rogers Music Center.
