BEAVERTON, Ore. -- “These are the live adult lice we just took off somebody,” says the owner of Beaverton’s “Lice Knowing you.”

Her business takes on the dirty work of removing the pesky parasites from children and their parents.

“90 per cent of the problem is on the head. That is the only place lice can live,” explained Janet Kennedy Unitan, the Director of Operations.

Janet and two other employees put non toxic, organic oil on the hair and then sometimes spend hours combing the lice and eggs out of a client's hair.

The cost generally ranges from $70 to $140 and there’s a guarantee you’ll walk out lice-free.

“They spent about three hours on my daughter’s hair and then they had to make me lice free,” said Barbara Anderman, “I had spent seven hours trying to do it myself at home.”

Unitan said parents can have success at home but shampoos are only one step in the process.

“The comb is the key tool in getting the lice off,” she explained. Parents often overlook this step she says, and focus too much attention on what to do around the house.

“We tell parents to vacuum the common areas and couches. Then wash the bedding or fluff on high dryer heat for 30 to 45 minutes. Hair brushes and ties should be put in a plastic bag in the freezer for 10 to 12 hours,” she explained.

Lice Knowing You” will also do a lice check for $15.

“I have never had lice and I have taken care of thousands of cases,” said Unitan “People come in here and they think it’s going to be everywhere when really it’s only on the head,” remarked Levitan.

As an environmental scientist, she is passionate about helping families take on the pest, “The average family spends 2 to 3 months in getting rid of lice. We want to help them get back to work and back to school sooner,” she said.
