PORTLAND -- Downpours after midnight led to this May being the fourth wettest ever, with an unofficial 4.60 inches.
The National Weather Service will make the record official later, said KGW meteorologist Nick Allard.
The wettest May ever was 5.55 inches in 1998, then 4.88 in 1996, 4.75 in 2010 and 4.57 in 1945. Allard said this May could still reach number three.
His forecast calls for diminishing showers today, some sun and showers Thursday and mostly sunny on the Friday, the last day of May.
What's remarkable about the record this month is that most of the rain fell after May 12, he said.
Normal monthly rainfall in May in Portlandd averages 2.47 inches.
What was the driest May ever? In 1992, a scant 0.10 inches was recorded at Portland International Airport.
