PORTLAND -- When it comes to plugging vehicles in, Portland is among the top five cities in the country. That’s one reason Ford chose the Rose City to showcase its newest line of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Portland is one of only ten stops on the Ford Power of Choice Tour. Students and others on the Portland State University campus got to test drive two vehicles Wednesday.

The Ford C-Max Energi hybrid gets up to 108 miles per gallon. The Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid can travel 620 miles overall on one tank of gas and one charge.

An industry spokesman admits car companies have a long way to go in explaining all the different electric and hybrid options available now.

“When you talk about the different technologies like plug-in hybrid, hybrid and a full-battery electric, we really need to work on letting the customer know those technologies do and making sure the customer chooses the right technology,” said Ford’s Director of Vehicle Electrification Mike Tinsky.

The hybrid and electric market is seeing an overall renewed interest. According to the Electric Drive Transpiration Association, nearly 50,000 hybrids were sold last month alone, a larger increase than in the overall auto sales market.

There is still a federal tax credit of $7,500 for the purchase of a hybrid or electric vehicle, but there is no longer an Oregon tax credit. Oregon does now offer a credit for the purchase of an electric charger.
