It's been two years since the Forest Service has had to resort to campfire bans in the forests near Cle Elum and Naches. But dry weather and a build-up of fuel has state and national park officials going to extreme measures to avoid a big wildfire season this year.

At midnight Thursday, the Cle Elum and Naches fire districts banned campfires, and park officials plan patrols to ensure the ban is observed.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources issued a statewide burn ban on all DNR-protected lands, effective July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012. The ban includes all forestlands in Washington except for federal lands. Campgrounds may have additional burn restrictions in place. Campers should check with their campground host before starting a campfire.
