PORTLAND - Local hardware stores are ready with every type of seal and pipe wrap and insulation to help keep you toasty warm and save on your heating bill this winter.
Winks Hardware owner, Jon Hearron said it's all about being prepared for freezing temperatures rather than snow.
"The biggest fear is if you loose your heat. Generally, interior pipes are fine when you have your heat, but if you loose your heat, that you need to prepare for," said Hearron.
There's a wrap for that, many, in fact, from insulation that surrounds pipes, to electric, to what are called beanie caps that protect protect outside faucets.
"Today, it feels like snow", Valerie Holman said. "Yesterday I thought no way, Today yes".
Holman is getting a head of winter's debut.
"I have some doors that I bought at the Rebuilding Center in Northeast Portland and they are a great deal, to buy things there because you can reuse stuff. But, they need weather-stripping. Because the cold air is blowing right in," she said.
Valerie was on her second trip to Winks Hardware on S.E. Stark St. to find just the right type of weather seal to keep out the cold. Not all are created equal.
With the right weather-stripping in hand, she's ready to face ole man winter head on.
"If you live in this part of the country you know it doesn't happen often, but it will get you," she said.
"A little bit of prevention is much less than the cure," said Hearron.
And don't forget to clear your driveway and sidewalks. There are plenty of traditional shovels to choose from. There's also snow melt to help speed up the process. And new this year, an eco-friendly spray de-icer.
"It can go down the drain, it can be used as a preventative or like a liquid snow shovel," said Hearron.
