ASHLAND, Ore. -- An apparent fish kill has been reported near Ashland's sewage treatment plant.

Public Works Director Mike Faught tells the Daily Tidings an unspecified number of fish he could not identify were found in lower Ashland Creek, alongside and downstream of the plant.

The paper said it wasn't known Monday whether the die-off was caused by effluent or something else.

Faught says there was no change in dissolved oxygen levels in the plant's discharge and no sign of toxic poisoning at the plant.

He says a private citizen apparently notified the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

State police, fish biologists and city officials are investigating.
