PORTLAND -- Farmers Markets are a favorite summer pastime, and an important part of Portland’s culture. They are fun, social experiences, and a chance to buy local foods.
Celeste Graalum said she loves going to them every week.
“Oh, I love shopping outside in the sunshine," she said.
This time of year, just about everything is in season, giving people lots of options.
“I love the blueberries,” Tom Runyan said. “I think they’ve got a lot of brain food in them.
Dr. Miles Hassell with Providence Integrative Medicine, couldn’t agree more.
“Berries have strong evidence for health benefits,” Dr. Hassell said. “They’re delicious and make a quick dessert with some cream.”
Dr. Hassell has a list of five “must-have” foods that he said we should all be looking for the next time we make a trip to our local farmers market. The list includes artisan cheese, seasonal fruit, greens, hummus, and grass-fed meats and wild salmon.
When it comes to buying local fruits and veggies, Dr. Hassell says not only are you supporting the local economy, but the foods themselves will likely carry higher nutrients.
“The shorter time that a berry is in storage, or any fruit and vegetable is in storage, probably the optimization of their nutrient content,” he said.
