You may no longer have to put your nose through the torture of sniffing the milk jug to see if it’s gone spoiled. A new high-tech jug will let you know, and even send an alert to your phone.

MSNBC.com reports the Milkmaid was the winning entry in a contest by social product development company Quirky and GE. The contest was designed to improve everyday objects by adding software.

The Milkmaid will measure pH levels, weight and temperature to check for freshness and how much milk is left. If the milk is going bad, LED lights on the base will change color. It will also send you a text message if you’re running low or if the milk is spoiled.

An iPhone app under development can also send you updated stats on your milk on demand.

No price for the Milkmaid has been announced.
