10 Essentials to Keep Safe

 1. Map and compass

 2. Water bottle (Nalgene or something similar) that doubles as storage

 3. Flashlight and spare batteries

 4. Space blanket

 5. Candle

 6. Metal whistle

 7. Small pocketknife

 8. Waterproof matches

 9. First-Aid kit (medications, antibiotic cream, tape, Band-Aids)

10. Small bag of foods: candy or power bars, trail mix, nuts, jerky
