PORTLAND – The Dalai Lama held a private event at Southeast Portland’s Maitripa College Friday, and hundreds who couldn’t get inside lined the nearby streets to get a glimpse of His Holiness.

People packed Southeast Market Street and watched the speech on a giant screen, and were shocked when he suddenly came out to greet the audience. He was only outside for about a minute, but it was a minute nobody in the crowd is likely to every forget.

“It’s quite emotional,” said Sharon Overby, who was thrilled to see the Dalai Lama in person. “I felt kind of teary when he came down. It's really great. We are very, very blessed to have him come to Portland.

“You feel the presence of a genuine, compassionate person, sincerity,” said Georgia Triplett. “He lives what he preaches, so it's inspiring.”
