PORTLAND – The 14th Dalai Lama arrived in Portland Wednesday morning, ahead of a packed three-day schedule as part of an environmental summit at Maitripa College.
He was accompanied by a full security detail, including Secret Service agents, because he’s officially considered a head of state. There were more security agents than visitors on hand to welcome him at PDX.
Mayor Charlie Hales and several college professors greeted him when he arrived.
A lot of planning went into the Dalai Lama’s schedule while he’s here, and organizers said they hope the public takes advantage of the opportunity to hear him speak.

“The Dalai Lama is really one of the great spokespeople for peace in the world,” said professor Jim Blumenthal of Maitripa College. “He's obviously really concerned about environmental issues. He was excited to accept the invitation to partake in the environmental summit and I hope people are inspired to get involved and make a difference and make the world a better place.”
The Dalai Lama will attend several events in Portland over the next few days.
