PORTLAND – One of the Oregon Zoo’s Asian elephants, Samudra, turned 5 years old Friday. Zoo staff say he is growing into his role as a big brother to his 9-month-old sister, Lily.
Samudra, whose name means “ocean” in Sanskrit, now weighs more than two tons. But that doesn’t stop him from playing with little sister, Lily (pictured left).
“Sam’s been a very patient big brother,” said Shawn Finnell, senior elephant keeper. “Lily has been enjoying daily play sessions with him.”
“King of the Mountain is the game of choice right now,” Finnel said. “Sam always lets her win.”
In two years, the Oregon Zoo’s elephants will have a lot more room to play. That’s when Elephant Lands, the new habitat that will quadruple the animal’s living space, will open.
