TROUTDALE, Ore. -- A Troutdale family is searching for a beloved family pet that flew away.

Vanessa Van der Borg started posting fliers all over the Portland area after her pet cockatiel, Piper (pictured, above and below left), took off Tuesday.

Van der Borg said her dad had just returned from a nine-month tour in Afghanistan and accidentally walked outside with Piper on his shoulder.

That’s when Piper flew away. Van der Borg said both her father and her other bird, Mr. Squawk-a-lot (pictured, below right) are devastated.

“My boyfriend is leaving to Scotland, so (Piper) is going to probably be one of my main supports.”

Van der Borg posted on Craigslist with information for anyone who may have seen Piper.
