PORTLAND - A Portland business is helping teachers take biology lessons beyond the books.
Pets on Broadway is taking animals on the road and into classrooms.
“This is a fun place and we get kids in here every day,” said Rob Deinlein, the Aquatics Manager at the store.
Children have been coming with their classes on field trips and the staff could see the enthusiasm.
“It’s a kick in the pants and we thought why not bring the fun and knowledge to even more kids?” remarked Deinlein.
About once a week, staff at the store pack up Bruce the bearded dragon and a cast of other characters.
“It’s easy to do and it’s fun,” said Deinlein.
On Thursday, the Pets on Broadway Outreach program was featured at Portland’s Trillium Charter school. Students learned about a tarantula and scorpion while looking a them.
They also got to touch a corn snake and the bearded dragon.
“We don’t have a large classroom, so we can only have one pet in here. It’s good for the kids to learn by touching and observing. It’s so much more memorable than a book,” said teacher Sara Tretter.
