PORTLAND – A mountain beaver broke into the Oregon Zoo’s river otter exhibit Tuesday and had to be returned to the wild.

The mountain beaver is a rodent found only in the Pacific Northwest and parts of California. It is not closely related to Oregon ‘s State Animal, the North American Beaver.

Zoo officials Wednesday said the elusive mountain beaver, also know as a boomer, was discovered in the river otter moat. Officials said mountain beavers have been documented in Forest Park.
