SALEM – A tiny dog survived a two-story fall from a Salem bridge, and is staying at a nearby animal shelter until authorities can find its owner.

Firefighters spotted the toy fox terrier wandering along Liberty Street SE, and stopping traffic Monday, said Brandon Silence of the Salem Fire Department.

He said the dog ran against traffic and jumped over the side of the Liberty Street Bridge, falling 20 to 25 feet. Firefighters scrambled down the embankment to find him.

“He tried running a little bit. I think he was in shock,” Silence said. “So we just split up, he hid in some bushes and we were able to get him.”

Silence said some blackberry bushes might have broken the dog’s fall.

He was taken to the Marion County Animal Shelter, but had no chip and no identification. Anyone who recognizes the dog is asked to call (503) 588-5366.
