PORTLAND -- Nine puppies were rescued from a Southeast Portland home that caught fire Tuesday, officials said.
The fire was reported just after 7:30 a.m. at 2539 SE 34th Ave.
Arriving crews saw smoke coming from the basement and talked with the home's sole resident, who was waiting outside, said Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman.
The resident told firefighters there were puppies trapped inside. Crews quickly rescued them, unharmed, and put out the fire.
Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire. No damage estimate was available.
