PORTLAND – Three Portland-area men were arrested by Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife troopers for illegally netting fish on Sauvie Island.

Last weekend, troopers on patrol found the nets on Sturgeon Lake, which is a state wildlife area and closed to the public.

Several species were entangled in the mesh including White Sturgeon, Catfish, Walleye, Carp and Northern Pike Minnows, troopers said.

A surveillance operation was set up and on Thursday, police found two men pulling the nets out and taking 32 fish.

Arrested were 46-year-old Vadim Kovaley, of Portland, and 53-year-old Yuriy Zlobini, of Milwaukie.

They were charged with illegal fishing, entering the restricted Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, and wasting game fish.

A third person, 55-year-old Vladimir Palamarchuk of Portland, was arrested on misdemeanor charge of aiding in the wildlife offense.
