Living LifeWise is a regular column provided by LifeWise Ambassadors – LifeWise employees whose healthy choices are helping them live better lives. Today’s column is provided by LifeWise Ambassador Johanna Dokken.

For my husband, constant activity is a way of life. He is somehow motivated to ride his bike for miles around Seattle each day, often with the kids bouncing along in the trailer behind him. And he does this year-round, through the pouring rain and near-freezing temperatures. He also knows all of the best side-street routes, and you can’t but feel that weaving his way through the streets of Seattle is all part of a grand adventure of secret routes and great escapes from traffic congestion. On top of this, he also clocks several thousand yards a week in the pool (or in our local lake during the summer months), all while working nights and helping raise our kids during the day.

He attributes his energy to his focus. While this can, at times, be an excitable temperament to be around (I liken his energy to young, confined Australian Cattle Dog), it also reminds me – especially when work is stressful, sleep is restless and fun adventures seem impossible – that activity can be found everywhere. And his energy encourages me to look for activity where I can find it.

Case in point: We thrive on family bike rides. A favorite destination of ours is the area around Woodland Park Zoo, where we zip through tree-lined neighborhoods. Swimming together is also a fun way to stay active and do it together.

I have to admit – it can be tiresome when your partner has boundless energy and is constantly in motion. However, for the most part, he is an energizing presence in my life and motivates me to do more. As I get older, having that presence in my life will keep my energy levels high, keep me fit and healthy, and lead me to adventures yet to be discovered.
