PORTLAND -- Willamette University has broken the Guinness world record for the most participants in a game of "Red Light, Green Light."

The game took place months ago, but Guinness did not inform the school until last week that they had set the new world record, said campus recreation director Bryan Schmidt.

Guinness spokeswoman Sara Wilcox confirmed with KGW Tuesday: "The largest game of Red Light/Green Light consists of 1,068 participants and was achieved by Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, USA, on 30 August 2013."

Schmidt said he organized the competition to bring diverse groups together on campus, and Red Light/Green Light was the perfect game because special skills were not needed to participate.

Guinness has not yet published the new World Record online or in its print issue.
