WASHINGTON D.C. -- A new survey by the Center for the American Dream found that 1 in 3 Americans would actually fail a citizenship test.

The survey asked 1,000 Americans 10 random questions from the actual citizenship exam. All the people questioned for the survey were over the age of 18.

The quiz included the questions: What right does the first amendment protect? (the answer is religion) and how many amendments does the constitution have? (the answer is 27)

KGW also took some of the questions to the Lake Oswego July 4th party to ask a random sampling of people celebrating Independence Day if they knew the answers:

Reporter: What happened on July 4th 1776?

Survey participant: "Is that when George Washington took a bite out of that apple and fell out of the tree? Reporter: I believe it's our independence day.

Reporter: What do we call the first 10 amendments of the constitution?

Survey participant: The first 10 amendments of the constitution - what do I call 'em? How about The Bill of Rights - that would be it?

All in all, the Lake Oswego crowd did pretty well.
