SALEM, Ore. -- The Hedgehog Welfare Society of Salem is now home to dozens of African pygmies rescued from a Texas hedgehog mill.
Vicki McLean, the chief organizer for the Hedgehog Society, said hundreds of African Pygmy hedgehogs were discovered in "dirty, cramped and hot" conditions at an Arlington, Tex.-based company in December.
The Hedgehog Welfare Society adopted 500. Many were sent to the homes of hedgehog society members across the U.S. in hopes of permanent homes, McLean said.

McLean saw the conditions in which the hedgehogs were found, in Texas, and cared for 44 of them at her home awhile.
She said that they can be playful and living pets, but they require special care -- and her organization carefully screens potential owners.
Takoda the hedgehog apparently had allergies.
"He made a habit of sneezing in my face, so I had to bring him home with me," she said.
