PORTLAND -- A man who plans to dribble a soccer ball from Seattle to Brazil has made it to the Portland Metro area and was hoping to receive a warm welcome as he was passing through.

Richard Swanson left the Space Needle at 6 a.m. on May 1 and hopes to make it to Sao Paulo in time for the 2014 World Cup. He'll visit 11 countries on the way.

He's dribbling a blue One World Futbol, which is a virtually indestructible soccer ball. And for every one purchased, another is given to a disadvantaged community, such as a refugee camp, war zone, disaster area or impoverished inner city.

He planned to spend Wednesday and Thursday in the Portland-Vancouver area and then continue his journey.
