PORTLAND --  Not too many eateries get to celebrate 30 years in business. At Escape from New York Pizza on NW 23rd Street, it's even a surprise.

They've been doing the same thing, the same way since 1983 and that's why people keep coming back for more.

It's a simple concept - do one thing and do it well. As the first pizza by the slice shop in Portland, owner Phil Geffner is happy to share in his success. Phil escaped from New York in the 1980s and ended up here.

He brought with him a slice of great pizza and a slice of New York attitude. Many of his employees have been with him from the beginning.

Phil takes care of those who have taken care of him and his business. Full health care is on the menu for employees working 20 hours or more. He's also helped some of his employees buy a home. He even takes them on vacation. Hawaii is set for fall.

"When people come to a place and they really like it and then 20 years later their kids come and then they have kids, generations come, there's something rich to that," Geffner said.

Geffner, doesn't follow a conventional business model. He said he has no desire to expand, one shop is plenty.

The 30th Anniversary party continues May 20th, until 11 p.m. There will be music, face painting and a free slice and a drink.
