WEST LINN, Ore. -- The owner calls it adult recess as his grown-up clients work out on a giant jungle gym.

“This is what fitness should be all about, getting off the treadmill and having fun,” remarked Dan Morlan. He’s a physical therapist and so is his wife, Melissa.

Together they own the newly opened ActiveEDGE Wellness Center in West Linn. “When we were going to school, we didn’t have money for a gym so we’d go to the playground and were inspired by what the kids were doing,” explained Melissa.

On the play structure for adults, there are endless possibilities for activities that promote functional exercise.

“You’ve got the core, you’re working the arms and legs, plus you’re using mobility and strength,” added Dan.

The jungle gym includes monkey bars, playground-like rings, a parallel bar and a place for pull-ups.

“I could only do 3 or 4 of the monkey bars as a kid, here I’ve trained to go back and forth,” said ActiveEDGE client Zach Webster.

New clients get an hour-long evaluation and are checked every three months.

“I used to be at the top of the jungle gym doing flips as a kid, this definitely brings back memories,” said client Gretchen Kreske as she worked out on the parallel bars.

Pro golfer Brian Henninger is using the jungle gym rings as he rebuilds his strength following knee surgery.

“You can get a full workout in 30 minutes and change it up depending on how strong you’re feeling. Today of course we’re showing off for the cameras,” he joked. Showing off on the jungle gym? One more way ActiveEDGE is allowing these adults to re-live those grade school years.

“Everyone is enjoying it,” said Melissa Morlan, ”We get asked about swings though, and we don’t have them – not yet!”
