VANCOUVER -- A suspect is in custody for attempting to steal a bicycle from a Vancouver man, who chased him down the street, tackled him and held him until police arrived.
The victim, David Austin, said he heard the prowler on the patio outside his apartment, near NE Royal View Avenue and NE Fourth Plain Boulevard, at around 4:30 a.m. Friday.
He said he looked out his window and saw the man riding away on his bicycle. His wife called 911 and Austin chased the suspect down the street.
"I'm in my jammies," Austin told KGW. "No shoes. No shirt. And I'm chasing this guy down the street."
He said he caught up with the suspect and pushed him as hard as he could, falling down on top of the bike. He suffered a few cuts and bruises, but was able to hold the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.
Austin said it was not the first time someone tried to steal his bike. It happened about a year ago and he said he wasn't going to let it happen again.
