PORTLAND -- One homeless man was seriously wounded and another grazed in a drive-by shooting early Wednesday morning, police said.

The men were sleeping under the Morrison Street Bridge when someone drove by and fired at them at around 5:15 a.m. One unidentified victim was shot in the chest and suffered life-threatening injuries. The other man was just grazed by a bullet. The shooter was still at large.

The shooting left those in the homeless community concerned about an increase in violence and the possibility that the shooting was a hate crime.

"Last time around this year, they threw a brick through somebody's tent and the year before that they were throwing furniture and broke somebody's face up," Ibrahim Mubarak told KGW.

"To have this egregious act of violence committed against two people that were asleep … it's really awful and it's also really uncommon," said Lt. Robert King with the Portland Police Bureau.

Police say the men were shot by a suspect from a pickup truck. The truck is described as black, newer, four doors and had no canopy.

Anyone with information that may help investigators was urged to call detectives at 503-823-0400.
