SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- A 29-year-old Salem, Ore., man has been arrested in the case of eight malnourished horses removed last week from a muddy field where several other horses were found dead.
Marion County sheriff's spokesman Don Thomson said Jared Allen Harrison was arrested Tuesday on three counts of first-degree animal neglect and eight counts of second-degree animal neglect. Bail was set at $35,000.
Thomson says Harrison was the caretaker for the horses removed from the property. The spokesman says Harrison acknowledged that the horses were kept under inadequate conditions. He reportedly said the horses' owner did not give him sufficient money for care and feeding. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer.
Dr. Barbara Kahl of United SPCA says the horses in her custody are responding to treatment for lice, parasites, rain rot, mud fever and general starvation.
