WOODBURN, Ore. -- Senior citizens have been targeted by fraudulent contractors offering home repair work in Woodburn, police said.

Home repair scams involving roof work, gutter maintenance and other small jobs have been reported. Consumers need to know a few basic protection measures to prevent identity theft, loss of property or worse.

- Check your contractors credentials. An online database lets Oregon residents identifies legitimate contractors by typing in the company's name or individual's last name. More: How to safely hire a contractor

- Never give out personal information to solicitors. Companies that are legitimately registered, licensed and insured to do costly home repair work typically do not go door-to-door soliciting for jobs, police said.

- Obtain identification from any suspecting company representative. A contractor’s business card should have a Construction Contractors Board identification number on it. The board also gives special licenses for contractors to work specifically on residences.

More information was available from the state construction board by calling 503-378-4621 or by calling the Oregon Attorney General’s Consumer Division Hotline at 1-877-877-9392.
