PORTLAND -- A tip to KGW led to the discovery of a Dumpster full of personal financial information of past customers of Staff Jennings boats in Southwest Portland.
Some files went back 20 years, including a boat purchased by David Moravik, who called the carelessness "unprofessional."
Better Business Bureau spokeswoman Kyle Kavas said it's the law for businesses to properly dispose of such records.
Staff Jennings closed a month ago. Jeff Jennings came to his old business to inspect the records.
At first, he said he didn't think the records contained personal information, but saw that there were Social Security numbers and other account information.
"That's not good," he said, and thanked the reporter for pointing this all out.
A shredding company was supposed to have come by and dispose of the records, he said. And the shredding did take place later.
The state Finance and Corporation divisision is looking into whether confidential information was compromised.
