PORTLAND -- New Seasons Market co-founder Eileen Brady has announced that she will run for mayor of Portland.

She joins former city commissioner Charlie Hales as the only announced mainstream candidates so far to challenge Sam Adams.

On her website, Brady said a mayor must "start each day with a laser-like focus on creating good jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities for everyone."

She wants a "vibrant and safe downtown" as well as every city neighborhood.

A reputation for creating a green city, Brady said, can only come "if we manage our costs, establish priorities, and stick with them."

Her website said that in 1999 Brady, her husband, two other families and about 50 friends co-founded New Seasons Market. In 2011, New Seasons has 10 stores employing about 2,000.
