PORTLAND, Or - Another decapitated cat has turned up in SE Portland, days after three dead cats were discovered in nearby Eastmoreland.
"I looked down and you're seeing it, but it's not registering," said David Williams. "I looked and realized what it was our cat."
To completely understand why Williams did not recognize the cat he and his family have owned for 11 years, you have to understand how he found it. The cat was reduced to its head, paws, and tail.
"It was horrible, it really was," said Williams. "It was very disturbing, and to see her in pieces was even more disturbing."
Williams made the gruesome discovery outside his home near SE 40th and Lexington about a month ago. About that same time, neighbors just 10 blocks away found three other mutilated cats.
"I saw a ginger cat head laying there on the ground," said Chris Dutton. "It just had no body."
Both Dutton and Williams think coyotes could be to blame, but what made Williams think otherwise was the way he found his beloved cat.
"No guts or internal organs at all," said Williams. "That was the weird part about it."
And that led Williams to believe the unthinkable.
"If someone's doing this, it's disturbing, that's very disturbing," he said. "That really upsets us and we hope that's not the case."
Detectives hoped that was not the case, either. They have gotten calls about the mutilated cats.
"The caller on that thought it was from coyotes," said Detective Mary Wheat. "But our central precinct detectives are looking into it."
Until he gets answers, Williams said he will keep a close eye on the pet he still has.
"Are they going to come after my dog or something like that," he worried.
