KALAMA -- A 40-year-old Chehalis man died Saturday morning after he drove his car onto railroad tracks and was hit head-on by a northbound Union Pacific train.

The driver has been identified as Michael L. Turpin, 40, of Chehalis.  Sgt. Steve Parker of the Kalama police said the collision was about 2:10 a.m.

There are no railroad crossings through Kalama, Parker said. The driver went through a parking lot in the 200 block of West Frontage Road and onto the tracks.

The 1986 Mazda truck was hit on the driver side and pushed about seven-tenths of a mile. It did not have its lights on and alcohol was found in the car.
