Dale Howard McGrew, 61, was transported by Lifeflight after 2:20 p.m. crash on Murray between Jenkins and Walker roads.
His passenger, Bradley Kent Holden, 54, died at the scene. Both are from the Portland-area, said police spokeswoman Pam Yazzolino.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the 2:20 p.m. accident. Alcohol might also be a factor, she said.
Witnesses told police a black Corvette was westbound on Jenkins and barely stopped for a red light at Murray. McGrew turned right onto Murray and accelerated. He lost control, fishtailed across all lanes and crashed into a cement retaining wall.
The Jaws of Life were needed to remove the two.
The northbound lanes of Murray were closed into Wednesday evening to reconstruct the crash, said Yazzolino.
The Corvette came to a rest wrapped around a tree, said Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Karen Eubanks.
TVF&R crews needed 30 minutes to remove McGrew from the car before he could be transported by Lifeflight, she said. They provided advanced life support during that time.
Similar efforts were used for Holden, but he could not be saved, she said.
Several motorists stopped to try and help the the injured, she said, including two nurses and crews from a nearby TVF&R station who heard the crash.
