SALEM -- Officers are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a northbound Amtrak Coast Starlight train bound for Portland Sunday.

The train arrived nearly six hours late after police investigated the reported assault.

Passengers told KGW that a young woman was in tears in the lounge car, being harassed by two men.

The same men were acting and speaking inappropriately during the trip, prompting families to leave their seats, a second passenger said.

The men were pulled off the train and questioned by police. They were not taken into custody.

Salem police told KGW that the case was taken as a courtesy to Amtrak police. The alleged crimes happened at an unspecified location south of the city. They said the proper jurisdiction may be some point between Klamath and Lane counties.

The train, originating in Los Angeles, had been scheduled to arrive in Portland at 3:40 p.m. before continuing on to Seattle.

Amtrak officials clarified Monday that the train was 5.5 hours late but less than two of those hours were due to the criminal investigation.

They added that there was an open criminal investigation and the matter had been referred to the Lane County district attorney.
