PORTLAND, Ore.. -- A Portland school has been selected as the state’s first "Dreamer" school.
Beginning in the fall of 2011, all students at Alder Elementary school will receive year-round mentors and academic enrichment provided by Oregon's "I Have a Dream" foundation.
The goal is to give the students all the support and skills necessary to get into and graduate from college.
“It’s like a wrap-around service where our students are helped socially, economically, tutoring,” said Principal Paz Ramos. “All those different areas our kids in poverty need support in; also, our community, and our parents.”
Nine different planning teams have been assembled to tackle all the obstacles that can get in student's way, addressing everything from jobs, transportation and housing to after-school care and summer school learning.
Alder Elementary, part of the Reynolds School District, is located at 17200 SE Alder St. in Portland.
