Looking for a few fun Halloween ideas? Here is a sampling of ghoulish events taking place around the greater Portland area in celebration of the calendar’s most frightful holiday.
Whether you’re looking for a haunted house, a pumpkin patch or even a chance to run through town in a costume, the city’s got it going on.
Haunted Houses
Milburn Manor
What: This perennial favorite offers many different “frightening” opportunities, including The Haunted Manor, Wicked-Wood Forest, Boo Lane and the Moonlit Pumpkin Patch
Where: 11503 Broadacres Rd NE in Hubbard, Ore., about 30 minutes outside of downtown Portland.

Fright Town
What: Fright Town bills itself as Portland’s scariest haunted house, “bar-none,” and will offer three haunted houses under one roof: The Asylum, Museum of Horrors and The Chop Shop in 40,000 square feet of space.

What: It’s the eighth annual Jantzen Beach Halloween spectacular, complete with haunted house, live music, carnival rides and theater productions. Scream at the Beach has been billed as one of the “Top 13 Haunts” in the nation by AOL.

What: The 13th Door Haunted House is billed as the premier event during the “Shocktoberfestival” at the Washington County Fair Complex.

Lone Fir Cemetery Tour of Untimely Departures
What: Tour of Lone Fir Cemetery offers history of graveyard and stories about the unusual circumstances surrounding the deaths of some of the buried. Tours are 45 minutes long and guests should plan to dress for rain or cold weather -- tours take place in rain or moonshine.
Where: Tour begins at SE 26th and Stark streets cemetery entrance
When: Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31 from 6-9 p.m.
How much: $5 donation appreciated
Glowing Greens Miniature Golf
What: Glow-in-the-dark, Halloween mini-golf
Where: Downtown Portland, SW 5th Avenue and Taylor Street, next to Qdoba Mexican restaurant

Sundays-Thursdays, Noon-10 p.m.
Fridays-Saturdays, noon - midnight
How much: $9 for adults; $8 for youth aged 7-12; $6.50 for kids under 7. Discounts available on website.
Davis Graveyard
What: A “spectacle of specters” that features spooky lights displays accompanied by machine-generated fog, video and animations. Davis Graveyard also features fun how-to activities like “Building your own graveyard” and “Promising playwrights.” Check the website [HL] for more information and details.

Shanghai Tunnel Halloween Tours
What: Take a tour of the “Portland Underground” and hear about ghosts that are said to be “leftover spirits of men who died after being shanghaied between 1850 and 1940.”

How much: $26 for adults; $17 for children under 12.
Beyond Bizarre Portland Walking Tours
What: Take a “paranormal” tour of old Chinatown and more with Portland Walking Tours. The event includes ghost-hunting equipment at notoriously “haunted” locations around the downtown area and ends across the Willamette River at the White Eagle. The website claims, “You’ll catch glimpses of ghosts, expose psychic hoaxes and duck through haunted passageways,” and emphasizes there are no theatrical performances.

When: Friday and Saturday evenings now through Halloween, with more dates to be added. Two tours are available -- one all-ages at 7 p.m. and one 21 and over at 10 p.m.
How much :
7 p.m. tour: $19 for adults; $15 for youth and seniors
10 p.m. tour: $29 for adults-only
What: A fun, family oriented trick-or-treating event at the Oregon Zoo. Activities include a scavenger hunt, activity stations and goodie bags for kids. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes; admission is free with regular zoo entry fees.

When: Saturday, Oct. 25-Sunday, Oct. 26
How much: $9.75 for adults; $8.25 for seniors; $6.75 for children ages 3-11; free for infants
Times of operation: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Out on the Farm
What: Triangles and circles mark paths in a 6-acre corn field maze on five miles of trails designed by an area artist. There’s also a pumpkin patch, hay rides and animal barn.

Open daily Saturday, Sept. 27-Friday, Oct. 31
Special: Moonlight Maze and Music, Saturday, Oct. 18

What: Two weekends of family fun, including hay and pony rides, games, music, foods and craft vendors. Attendees may pick their own locally-grown pumpkins and gourds from the patch. A portion of the parking cost proceeds will benefit the Amani Center of Columbia County.

2008 Pumpkin Patch and Harvest Festival
What: Pick your own pumpkins in a 15-acre pumpkin patch, grab your corn stalks, hay bales and mums for decorating. Celebrate Autumn riding the ponies, touring on hayrides and horse-drawn buggies winding through the Pitch-Black Hay Maze. Kids can slide down a giant hay slide, ride through a “Spooky Tunnel” and blast corn from the all-new Corn Cannon.

When: Every weekend from Saturday, Sept. 27, through the end of October

Times of operation: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
What: A fun, family friendly place for “entertainment on the farm,” featuring free hay rides to a 5-acre pumpkin patch, a 5-acre corn maze, a 1,000-bale hay maze, a petting zoo and other special entertainment. Pumpkins cost 25 cents a pound.
Where: Heiser Farms, 20900 Grand Island Loop, Dayton, Ore.
When: Weekends beginning Saturday, Oct. 4. Pumpkins are for sale all week long.

Times of operation: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends
What: The Great Pumpkin Hunt, organized by the city of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department, features a scavenger hunt by teams. At each stop along the hunt, teams will be challenged to perform a task and then receive their next clue. Teams will conclude at a harvest party sponsored by Trader Joes at an undisclosed location -- you’ll find out when you make it to the last clue!
Where: Starts at the Hillsboro Stadium and courses throughout the city of Hillsboro
When: Saturday, Oct. 25
How much: $40 per car-team
Times of operation: Noon-5 p.m.
Athletic Events
What: Celebrate Halloween and give back to the community with the 6th annual Run Like Hell! 5K, 10K and half marathon runs, which benefit P:ear, a non-profit devoted to creatively mentoring homeless youth. Events are “stroller friendly” but leave your pets at home. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and compete in costume contest.
Where: The races start and finish on Broadway in Pioneer Square.
When: Sunday, Oct. 19
