PENDLETON, Ore. -- The U.S. Forest Service says much of the Umatilla National Forest remains under snow and that access to favorite Memorial Day camping or mushroom-picking sites may be difficult or impossible.
Recreation officer Larry Randall says it is an unusual spring in the Blue Mountains and that most places above the 4,500-foot level cannot be accessed.
He said there is still about 5 feet of snow at Tollgate.
He said many lower-level campgrounds are open for this weekend but likely will fill quickly.
He said lower areas may be snow-free but still very muddy.
