The summer travel season officially begins on Memorial Day weekend and TripAdvisor has announced the top Memorial Day destinations for Portland-area residents:

According to the Memorial Day and Summer Travel Survey of more than 4,000 travelers, 90 percent of Americans will travel for leisure this summer. Based on results from the survey, TripAdvisor has created a snapshot of what we may expect from American travelers this summer:

•22% of Americans plan to travel on Memorial Day Weekend

•51% said their summer plans will be affected by the high gas prices

•23% plan to take more time on summer vacation this year than last year, 56 plan to take the same amount

•37% plan to spend more money on vacation this year than last year, 40% plan to spend the same amount

•Among those traveling for Memorial Day, 59% of Americans plan to drive and 37% plan to fly

In addition, TripAdvisor has named the top overall U.S. destinations based on comments from millions of real travelers and determined by a combination of their favorite places and overall popularity on TripAdvisor:

3. San Francisco, California

4. Poipu, Hawaii
