10.) Why is the closed captioning paraphrased or misspelled on your newscasts? The closed captioning is done on a "live" basis or "on the fly" during all newscasts. Paraphrasing is a captioner's way of keeping up with the anchors during wordy and lengthy news stories. The misspelled words are also due to the pace of a newscast. All captioners use their own customized electronic dictionaries with the most commonly used words and their derivatives. Oftentimes a word is used that sounds very similar to other words. For example, words like hear/here, or/oar, bear/bare, there/their/they're, and dough/doe can create problems for the captioner. Additionally, captioners have to be instantly aware of correct punctuations, hyphens, correct formatting of numbers, dollar amounts, and have to rely on natural pauses for comma insertion. All this at the uncommon rate of 260 words per minute (on average).

11.) Why is my television
reception so bad?
Assuming you are receiving our signal over-the-air through an attic
or aerial antenna (no cable or satellite), the variables involved are to numerous
that
it would prevent a single answer for all questions. Atmospheric conditions
such as the weather, as well as man-made conditions such as tall buildings,
can create
interference problems for every viewer. Add to this the condition and age of
your equipment and the distance between your antenna and the KGW transmitter,
and your're dealing with uncontrollable factors. KGW can only control its
signal from its main studios to the transmitter. Consult your local television
reception
specialist for additional equipment best suited for the conditions and questions
in your specific area.
