H2… Oh!

Fascinating Facts:

  • Dehydration may cause dry-wrinkly skin, headaches and fatigue!
  • As you age, the amount of water you need increases but your thirst actually decreases.  So basically, we’ve got to work harder at getting enough water!
  • During strenuous exercise, the body can release (through breathing, sweating, etc,) up to 2 liters of water per hour.  For every 15 minutes of exercise, you need to consume 8oz to re-hydrate your body.
  • Severe dehydration is characterized by an immediate drop in body weight of more than 10%. For example, if an individual weighs 150lbs your body weight would drop approximately 15lbs.
  • You are considered “hydrated” when your total body water measures between 40-60%.
  • Water is the importer of nutrients and the exporter of waste!
  • An inadequate intake of water has been associated with arthritis, asthma and high blood pressure.
  • When dehydrated, the body releases the hormone “histamine”.  Histamine constricts airways in order to limit possible vapor loss. This may result in breathing difficulty or asthma.
  • If dehydrated, capillary refill (the process of blood refilling empty capillaries) can take up to 4 seconds.  When hydrated, this process takes only 2 seconds.
  • In a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit, your body expends approximately 14.4 calories per hour by breathing.
  • MILD dehydration will slow down your metabolism as much as 3%.
  • A recent University of Washington study revealed that one 8oz glass of water eliminated “midnight hunger pangs” for nearly 100% of the participating dieters.
  • A mere 2% drop in body water may trigger symptoms such as: fuzzy or short-term memory loss, difficulty performing basic math and even focusing on a computer screen.
  • Amazingly, drinking 5 glasses of water per day will decrease your risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79%, stroke by 50% and the likelihood of developing bladder cancer by 50%!
  • Your body requires at least 64oz of water per day to maintain hydration. For the facilitation of fat loss, drinking an additional 8oz for every 20-25 pounds of body fat you want to lose is necessary.
