Not All Carbs are Created Equal

Seems these days that carbohydrates are getting all the blame for our over-weight-woes. The truth is…not all carbohydrates are bad! To the contrary, some carbohydrates deliver required nutrients that the body cannot acquire otherwise.

There are “good carbs” and “not so good carbs”. Good carbohydrates are complex; they consist of several sugar molecules attached together forming a long chain. These carbohydrates are usually accompanied by fiber and other nutrients that are beneficial and conducive to good health. These come from foods like whole grain breads and vegetables. The “not so good” carbohydrates come from foods that are highly processed. They are referred to as “simple carbohydrates”. Having only one or two sugar molecules attached together, simple carbohydrates come from foods such as table sugar, candy, and sodas. Sadly, these are rarely accompanied by nutrients.
