New law snuffs smoking in Oregon

SALEM, Ore. -- Oregon is just days away from expanding the state's workplace smoking ban.
That means no smoking in restaurants or bars.
Starting on New Year’s Day smoking will not be allowed inside bars or taverns or outside within 10 feet of doors or windows.
Businesses can be fined up to $500 a day or $2,000 a month for violating the law. The law is complaint-driven -- meaning the health department will not patrol for violations.
The owner of Joe's Cellar in Northwest Portland said he was hoping by expanding outdoor smoking business will be okay.
"Parking is golden down here but I don't want to lose my base and 80 percent of them are smokers,” Jim Hittner said. “I need to do something to keep those people around."
There are a few places where smokers can still light up after Jan. 1, including cigar bars, tobacco shops and tribal casinos.
