Oregon chooses contractor to replace aged mental hospital
12:29 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 24, 2007
Oregon officials expect to award a contract Thursday to replace the century-old State Hospital.
Barring a protest from the runner-up bidder, the Department of Health and Human Services plans to award the contract for a new 620-bed psychiatric hospital in Salem to Hoffman Construction Co. of Portland.
The hospital is to be built on the site of the current hospital, an eight-building complex featured in the 1975 film "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest."
"We're excited. It's a great project for Oregon," said Dan Harmon, a Hoffman vice president. "Our plan is to demolish the existing hospital and build a new hospital, (but) it's entirely possible some of the collateral buildings will be renovated."
The state will soon move patients to make way for construction, to begin in 2009.
The state also plans to replace its Junction City psychiatric hospital with a 360-bed facility.
Combined, the state says, construction of the two hospitals will cost $413 million, the money raised by issuing bonds. The new Salem hospital is scheduled to open in 2011, the Junction City hospital in 2013.
