PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A month-old Grants Pass infant being treated at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland has begun to recover from a rare case of infant botulism.

Botulism affects about 100 babies in the U.S. each year by paralyzing their muscles and respiratory systems. It is not usually fatal.

The infant's mother, Jennifer Perez, says she noticed her daughter, Aracelis Mora, had gone limp a day after they passed a construction site while on a stroll.

The bacteria that causes botulism is often associated with food but can also pass through the air to babies who breathe in or swallow infectious spores.

Mora is one of two reported victims in Oregon this year.
