Bug fogger canisters explode in Portland woman's car
12:02 PM PDT on Friday, August 22, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland family wants people to be warned about the dangers of bug fogger canisters after they exploded and shot through a car.
There have been reports from all over the country about the canisters exploding. However, the Portland situation was unique because while a warning on the label says the foggers can burst in temperatures over 130 degrees, Kimberly Hammond said it was only 78 degrees when it happened to her.
“They went like a rocket,” Hammond told KGW.

Kimberly’s daughter left the canisters in the car when she want to work. They exploded before lunch, on a cool morning.
Thankfully, no one was inside the car when it happened because one canister shot across the car and smashed through the windshield and two others lodged in the car’s dash.
Kimberly said if her daughter had been driving, the trajectory shows that she would likely have been hit.

"At first I had visions that it would be like fireworks going off in the car. But there's no evidence that they went anywhere but straight forward," she said. “You figure, if something can damage automotive glass, it's certainly going to damage someone's skull."
Now the Hammond family wants everyone to be warned that bug foggers should never be left in a car, even if it’s a cool day.
