SALEM, Ore. -- Schools across Oregon are contributing to a new database that charts the scope of childhood diabetes in Oregon.

The goal, public health officials say, is to pinpoint exactly how many children in Oregon have diabetes, and perhaps also improve diabetes care.
They even hope it might isolate factors that contribute to the development of childhood diabetes.
Under state law, schools and physicians are required to report information on children age 18 and under who have diabetes.
Schools must obtain parental consent in order to report this data.
